Thai military welcomes transgender people into the armed forces by changing the laws.

Transgender feel they would be forced to become the gender they left behind.

Thailand's first sex change surgery was performed in early 70's and the country now performing more sex change procedures per year than any other country in the world. Thailand is today well known for its fairly high tolerance of transgender men but still they can't legally change their birth gender to reflect this in ID cards and passports.

These days law changes among transgender issues among Thai army recruits are put on the table where the Thai army is planning to change the wording of transgender without hurting their feelings.

Therefore instead of defining transgender as being a "psychological abnormality" or a "gender identity disorder", the Thai army has made new definitions to avoid offending transgender people by just refer to transgender people as two types, namely "Type 2" or "Type 3". Originally, the Thai army had proposed using "Gender Identity Disorder" (GID) instead of "Psychological Abnormality" (PA), but had re-evaluated the two terms due to protests from transgender human rights groups. The groups opposed to any term that suggests abnormality in it as being transgender have nothing to do with neither abnormality nor disorder.

Based on this, the Thai army are now using "Type 2" definition as referring to a transgender person who have undergone breast augmentation, while the "Type 3" reefers to transgender that has undergone full sex change.

As Thai military conscription is scheduled to be conducted from April 1-11, the Defence Ministry is now amending the Conscription Act of 1954, said Col. Thaksin Chiamthong, director of the academic resources division of the Thai Army Reserve Command and added that the main purpose of the amendment is to correct the part of the law to state that transgender are not longer considered as being psychologically abnormality so they can also join the Thai army.

In the Thai army, "Type 1" reefers to men whose appearances are typical men and men get conscripted but "if the number of "Type 1" is insufficient, "Type 2" will be conscripted as well, despite their female-like breasts." said Col. Thaksin and added that Types 2 and 3 will be required to report for annual conscription for three years before being exempted permanently, he said.

The changes in law will mean we will se more "Type 2" and "Type 3" transgender in Thai army, however most male to female transgender in Thailand, also known as "kathoeys" feels they should not need to serve in the army, which is made quite impossible as Thailand has an involuntary annual conscription lottery. Transgender see this as a punishment as they cut the hair off and destroy all femininity to "transform" them into men again. They say the new law is enforced so transgender no longer can brand themselves "permanent insane", or having "mental disorder" which would under the Conscription Act of 1954 entitle them for not enrolling the Thai military.
